Unification Church Leader Han Hak-ja Indicted and Detained
Han Hak-ja, the President of the Unification Church and a key figure in the alleged “collusion between religion and politics” involving President Yoon Suk-yeol’s administration, will stand trial while under detention.
The special prosecutor’s team, led by Min Joong-ki, investigating various allegations surrounding First Lady Kim Keon-hee, announced that Han had been indicted on charges including violations of the Political Funds Act, the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, destruction of evidence, embezzlement in the course of duty, and violations of the Act on Aggravated Punishment for Economic Crimes.
The team also indicted Jeong Won-joo, former secretary to the Unification Church president, without detention as an accomplice.
Previously, Yoon Young-ho, former head of the Unification Church’s World Headquarters, had been indicted for making “split donations” to politicians from the ruling People Power Party and now faces additional charges.
Yoon’s wife, Lee (former chief of the church’s finance bureau), was also brought to trial for business embezzlement.
Han and Jeong are accused of conspiring with Yoon to deliver 100 million won in political funds to PPP lawmaker Kwon Seong-dong in January 2022, seeking government support for the Unification Church. They are also charged with making additional split donations totaling 144 million won to other PPP lawmakers around March–April of that year.
In July 2022, through a religious figure known as “Geomjin Beopsa” (Jeon Seong-bae), they allegedly gave luxury gifts—a necklace and a Chanel bag—to Mrs. Kim, seeking favors related to church affairs.
Prosecutors claim the defendants illegally used church funds for lobbying purposes, applying embezzlement charges.
Specifically, they are accused of misappropriating: 100 million won in cash given to Rep. Kwon, 210 million won for split donations to the PPP, 82 million won for luxury gifts to Mrs. Kim, and another 110 million won from church-affiliated institutions between 2021 and 2024.
They are also suspected of diverting $500,000 of church funds to support election campaigns in Asian and African countries.
In addition, Han and Jeong allegedly obtained information about an investigation into overseas gambling in October 2022 and instructed Yoon to destroy evidence.
The special prosecutor’s office continues investigating allegations that the Unification Church distributed party membership applications to followers to support a specific candidate ahead of the PPP’s March 2023 national convention — a potential violation of the Political Parties Act, which bans coercive membership recruitment.
The Unification Church released a statement expressing regret over Han’s indictment, asserting that “President Han has carried out her religious mission without political or financial motives” and that she “will faithfully participate in the trial to reveal the truth with transparency.”

When the special prosecutor pressed President Han about the overseas gambling in Las Vegas, she stated, “I am a U.S. permanent resident, and in America I gamble in casinos many times,” adding, “It was just for rest.”
In other words, while acknowledging the fact of overseas gambling, President Han defended herself by saying, “Since I am a permanent resident, it is not illegal.”
The special prosecutor considers her statement as corroborating the fact that accounting records related to gambling were destroyed.
Furthermore, since President Han’s nationality is South Korean, even though she is a U.S. permanent resident, if she gambled using public funds, she cannot avoid punishment under South Korean law for the crime of embezzlement of public funds.
President Han is suspected of using church funds (i.e., donations) to gamble in Las Vegas and other U.S. locations on a scale of about 60 billion won (approximately 6.2 billion yen, $44 million USD.

Designated as the final decision-maker in the Unification Church lobbying scandal involving politics, Han Hak-ja, president of the Unification Church, was subjected to more than 10 hours of questioning the previous day. Compared to her first interrogation after detention, which lasted only four and a half hours, this was a far more intense investigation. Kwon Seong-dong asking him to “use it well for candidate Yoon Suk-yeol.” They also verified that former chief of staff, Jung Won-joo, had written in his notebook that 100 million won in illegal political funds was delivered on January 5.
Based on this circumstantial evidence, the special prosecutors pressed Han on whether she delivered 100 million won in illegal political funds to Rep. Kwon on January 5, 2022. Han reportedly replied, “I don’t remember.”
Han further emphasized that she was not involved in delivering such illegal funds, claiming instead that Yoon Young-ho, who handled practical affairs, acted on his own without informing her. Her side argued, “Like a chief administrator in Buddhism, Yoon acted independently without reporting to Han, and she knew nothing about it.”
Han also faces suspicions that she handed over a shopping bag full of cash to Rep. Kwon during two meetings at Cheon Jeong Palace in Gapyeong in February and March 2022.
Rep. Kwon told prosecutors, “I received a shopping bag, but it contained a necktie.” On this matter as well, Han told investigators the previous day, “I don’t remember.” She explained that it was customary to gift luxury brand neckties to guests at Cheon Jeong Palace, but she could not recall whether she had given one to Kwon. The prosecutors are considering summoning Han again before the Chuseok holiday.
Han was detained on September 23, 2025, on four charges: violation of the Political Funds Act, violation of the Anti-Graft Act, embezzlement, and instigation of evidence destruction.
Her legal team filed a motion for a detention review, asserting there was no reason to detain her. A detention review is a court procedure to determine whether detention during the investigation stage is lawful. Once requested, the court must question the detained suspect within 48 hours.
The 8-3 Criminal Appeals Division of the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Judge Choi Jin-sook, scheduled the detention review hearing for 4 p.m. on October 1. During the session, Han will be questioned, and evidence will be examined. The conclusion is expected before the Chuseok holiday.

The special prosecutor team led by Min Joong-ki, investigating allegations surrounding First Lady Kim Keon-hee, summoned a former finance director of the Unification Church’s world headquarters on the 26th in connection with suspected “church–politics collusion.”
Lee Shin-hae appeared at the special prosecutor’s office located in KT Gwanghwamun Building West, Jongno District, at 2:10 p.m. as a suspect.
She is accused of collaborating with his spouse, former world headquarters director Mr. Yoon, and church leader Han Hak-ja, to embezzle about 830 million won between April and July 2022, using the money to buy a Chanel bag and expensive necklace for Mrs. Kim.
In the indictment against Mr. Yoon, Mrs. Lee was named as an accomplice with Han Hak-ja in the charge of occupational embezzlement.
The indictment also stated that the three conspired between late 2021 and 2024 to provide Unification Church funds under the guise of “special mission support” and “mission activity expenses” to former President Yoon Suk-yeol, Mrs. Kim, and People Power Party lawmaker Kweon Seong-dong.
Although the special prosecutor’s office detained Han Hak-ja on charges of occupational embezzlement, the Unification Church claimed that “all of Yoon’s acts were personal deviations.”
On the 1st of this month September, the church also reported Mrs. Lee to police, alleging that during his tenure as finance director, she diverted around 2 billion won in church funds.
Mrs. Lee responded in a statement, arguing, “All planning and execution of church finances followed headquarters’ orders.”

이어 "實體聖靈(실체성령)으로 오신 獨生女(독생녀), 참어머님께서 世上(세상)으로부터 온갖 嘲弄(조롱)을 받으시고 靈肉(영육)의 苦痛(고통)을 겪으시는 모습을 보며 저는 맑은 하늘조차 보기 두려워 고개를 들 수 없다"며 "깊은 罪責感(죄책감)에 몸 둘 바를 모르겠다"고 謝罪(사죄)했다.

After President Han Hak-ja was detained and calls for apology and resignation from the current leadership of the Unification Church continued, Du Seung-yeon, director of the World Mission Headquarters, announced his intention to resign.
On the 24th, through his resignation letter, Director Du stated:
“The suffering that True Mother (President Han) is enduring now is an unpardonable sin on our part,” adding, “For over 40 years, I have relied only on True Parents, and I have always pondered how to repay the blessings received from them.”
He continued:
“However, as someone in the position of serving and protecting True Mother, I failed in my mission, and thus True Mother has come to face the tragic situation of imprisonment. I deeply feel and repent for this.”
He emphasized:
“Seeing True Mother, who came as the Only Begotten Daughter and Substantial Holy Spirit, being ridiculed by the world and suffering in both spirit and body, I cannot even dare to look up at the clear sky. I am overwhelmed with guilt and do not know where to put myself.”
Director Du declared:
“As a person appointed as head of the World Mission Headquarters, I take full responsibility and deeply feel accountable. As of today, I hereby resign from the position of World Mission Headquarters Director.”
He added:
“Returning to an ordinary individual, I repent and will dedicate prayer and devotion so that True Mother may return quickly. Until the end of my remaining life, I pledge again to live for True Mother’s peace and well-being.”
If Han Hak-ja is arrested, he will be held at the Seoul Detention Center until his sentence is finalized after the first, second, and third trials. Once her sentence is finalized, she will most likely be sent to Cheongju Women's Prison.
On the early morning of September 22, 2025, President Han Hak-ja was detained (arrested). On September 23, it was confirmed that she was assigned to a single cell at the Seoul Detention Center and underwent formal admission procedures. President Han was imprisoned in a solitary confinement cell of the detention center. Like other inmates, President Han underwent a thorough body inspection, changed into prison clothes, and had a mugshot taken.
